A treatment stage after the septic tank, producing effluent clean enough for smaller or more sensitive disposal areas.
Secondary treatment adds a further biological process after primary settlement — commonly aeration, a textile or sand media filter, or a recirculating filter. The result is substantially cleaner effluent, which is why councils frequently require secondary treatment in sensitive catchments and on smaller sections.
These systems are consented on the assumption they will be maintained. Servicing intervals, records and sometimes effluent sampling are typically conditions attached to the consent.
