Pumping and emptying describe the same job: a vacuum tanker removing accumulated tank contents.

"Pumping" is the term many New Zealand property owners use for the vacuum pump-out of a septic tank. It is the same physical job as emptying, and it is carried out with a tanker that draws the contents out through a suction hose before the waste is transported to a licensed disposal site.

Hose runs are the practical constraint. Most tankers carry enough hose for a reasonable distance from a hard standing area, but long runs, steep ground and soft paddocks can require extra hose, different equipment, or a smaller truck. Telling us about access up front means the assigned provider can quote accurately instead of adding charges on the day.

If your system has more than one chamber, a pump chamber, or a separate grease trap, mention that in your request. Those are often pumped at the same visit but need to be planned for.

Frequently asked questions

Is pumping different from cleaning?
Pumping removes the liquid and sludge. Cleaning goes further and includes washing down internal walls and removing compacted material that a straight suction pass leaves behind. Cleaning is normally arranged when a tank has been neglected for a long period.
How long does a pump-out take?
For a standard household tank with good access, most operators are on site under an hour. Difficult access, buried lids or heavily compacted sludge add time.
