Septic Tank vs Wastewater Treatment System
One relies on settlement and soil; the other adds mechanical treatment to produce cleaner effluent.
A conventional septic tank separates solids and lets soil complete the treatment. It has no moving parts, needs no power, and asks little beyond regular emptying — but it needs a reasonably sized, well-drained disposal area.
A secondary or aerated treatment system introduces oxygen, media filtration and sometimes disinfection, producing effluent clean enough for smaller or more sensitive disposal areas, including dripper irrigation. That capability comes with pumps, blowers, controls and a mandatory service schedule.
Neither is universally better. Section size, soil, water table, catchment sensitivity and council rules decide which is appropriate for a given property.
