Septic Tank Overflowing — What It Means and What To Do

An overflowing tank means wastewater has nowhere left to go. It is a health risk and needs professional attention quickly.

When effluent appears at the lid, around the tank, or on the ground above the disposal field, the system has run out of capacity somewhere between the house and the soil. That can be a full tank, a blocked outlet, a failed pump, or a disposal field that can no longer absorb what it is being given.

Overflowing wastewater carries pathogens. Keep people and animals away from the wet area, do not hose it into a drain or waterway, and reduce water use inside the house immediately — every flush, shower and wash cycle makes the situation worse.

  • Tank overdue for emptying, with no settlement space left

  • Never open and enter a septic tank — gases can be fatal
  • Do not add drain chemicals or additives to force it clear
  • Do not pump effluent onto the ground or into a waterway
  • Do not attempt electrical work on the pump circuit

Can I keep using the toilet?
Use as little water as possible until it is assessed. Every litre entering the tank has to go somewhere, and right now it has nowhere to go.
Will emptying the tank fix it?
It usually provides immediate relief, but if the underlying cause is a blocked outlet, a failed pump or a saturated field, the tank will refill and overflow again. Ask the provider to identify the cause while they are on site.
