Sand Filter Systems
Effluent is dosed over a graded sand or media bed where aerobic bacteria provide secondary treatment.
Sand filters — intermittent or recirculating — pass primary effluent through a bed of graded sand or engineered media. The biological film on the media does the treatment, and the result is a well-clarified effluent with no moving parts inside the filter itself.
They are robust but not maintenance-free. Surface crusting, uneven dosing and media fouling all reduce performance, and the dosing pump and distribution laterals need the same attention as any pumped system.

- How long does the sand media last?
- Many years when the upstream tank is maintained and solids do not reach the bed. Poor primary treatment shortens media life dramatically.
