The disposal field is where treated effluent returns to the soil — and the most expensive part of the system to replace.

A drain field, effluent field or disposal field takes liquid from the tank and lets it soak into the soil, where natural processes complete the treatment. It only works while the soil around the pipes stays permeable. Once solids, biomat or continual saturation seal that soil, the field can no longer accept flow.

Field servicing covers the things that can be improved: clearing and rebalancing distribution, jetting or cleaning laterals and drippers where the design allows, restoring correct dosing, and removing the causes of overload such as stormwater ingress or a leaking toilet cistern.

Be realistic about outcomes. A field that has been receiving solids for years may be beyond restoration, and the honest answer is sometimes replacement or a system upgrade. A provider will tell you what they find.

What overloads a disposal field

  • Solids carrying over from an overfull tank
  • Roof water or surface stormwater directed into the area
  • Leaking taps, cisterns and appliances adding constant flow
  • Compaction from vehicles, stock or structures over the field
  • Undersized field for the number of occupants
  • High groundwater or naturally poor-draining soils

  • Keep the tank emptied on schedule
  • Keep vehicles and heavy stock off the area
  • Divert stormwater away
  • Avoid planting deep-rooted trees nearby
  • Spread water use through the week

Frequently asked questions

Can a failed drain field be repaired?
Sometimes partially. Distribution problems, blocked laterals and solids carry-over can often be addressed. Soil that has been sealed by biomat over many years generally cannot be restored, and replacement or an upgrade to secondary treatment is the usual path.
Why is the grass over my field greener than the rest of the lawn?
Nutrient-rich effluent close to the surface encourages growth. On its own it is not always a fault, but combined with soft ground, odour or ponding it points to a field that is struggling.
