Aerated systems inject air to drive aerobic treatment, producing high-quality effluent — while the blower runs.
An AWTS uses a blower or aerator to keep the treatment chamber oxygenated, supporting bacteria that work far faster and more thoroughly than the anaerobic bacteria in a plain septic tank. Many systems then clarify and, in some cases, disinfect before discharging to irrigation.
The dependency on mechanical parts is the trade-off. When a blower fails, the process turns septic within days, and odour or an alarm is usually the first sign. Scheduled servicing is not optional on these systems.

- Most systems run the blower on a cycle, so brief silence can be normal. Prolonged silence, especially with odour or an alarm, points to a failure and should be assessed.
