What Does a Septic Alarm Mean?
An alarm is a countdown, not a fault code. It tells you the system has reached a level or state it should not.
Most alarms are high-level alarms: a float has detected liquid above the normal operating band, usually because a pump has stopped or the disposal field cannot take flow. Others monitor the aerator or the power supply to the control panel.
The alarm point is set below the level at which the system backs up or overflows, and the reserve is typically measured in hours of ordinary household use. Cutting water use is the single most effective thing you can do while waiting for a provider.
What triggers an alarm
- Pump failure or tripped pump circuit
- Float switch stuck or failed
- Aerator or blower failure
- Power interruption to the control panel
- Field saturation after heavy rain
- Unusually heavy water use

- Note the panel brand and any lights or codes
- Check for a recent power cut
- Keep chambers closed and stay clear
