The practical approach is to service before the season rather than during it, and to stagger water use across a busy stay.
Before the season
- Book a service and pump-out if due, well ahead of the holidays
- Check the alarm and pump if fitted
- Run water through all traps to re-seal them
- Check the field for ponding after winter rain
During a busy stay
- Spread showers and laundry through the day
- Post a simple guest note: nothing but human waste and toilet paper
- Watch for slow drains as an early warning
Closing up
- Leave traps filled where possible
- Note the date of any service for next season
- Arrange periodic checks if the property is rented out

- Not necessarily. Measurement is better than the calendar — a lightly used tank may go considerably longer.
